GIFs as an art form is a question that is rarely discussed. Because GIFs are so easily made by anyone and can be so simplistic, I don't think many consider their creative nature an artwork. The thing that makes GIFs so original is generally the person whom consumes it tends to create it. The simplistic nature of the GIF is what makes it so appealing to people. It's easily created and accessible to a variety of people. GIFs are a fun animated way to show an opinion and make a point. GIFs are found all over the internet and there are even galleries online that show different kinds of GIFs. It's interesting when you say there are galleries of GIFs. Usually when you think of a gallery, you think about artistic works which is unusual for GIFs. Many people don't include GIFs in the artist world, but maybe they should be considered. Because GIFs are so small there's not too many opportunities for them to be shown in theatre, studio, or gallery; it is very restricted to the internet.I think it's interesting simplicity is something that is important in art. I liked how the second article connected the art of compression, with the need for simplicity.
There's many galleries out there that have GIFs, they really only exist on the internet. This is just one example. http://gif-gallery.tumblr.com/
