Reading Response 2 - Emily Bichler
I thought that this article made an interesting point to show that the many items that consumers use everyday that relate to the media are always changing and being updated. I really enjoyed when the idea of how consumers need to buy all these different products just to run a particular device and how certain companies adapt or don't adapt to similarities. For example, for all apple products you generally need to buy all the chargers, connectors, etc. with the particular apple design for them to even work. Even to connect an apple product to a projector, needs a special cord. From the producers point of view, I can see why they did this. If their product is successful, people will pay the ridiculously high prices for these products whether or not it makes sense.
I found this link which shows how some companies do try to adapt to each other.
Chargers
Charger they are talking about
I personally, do not use apple products, so I find it nice that I don't need to buy particular chords and connector for my lap top and phone. It's also nice when other people whom don't use apple products and don't have the same phone as me can easily borrow chargers between each other.
I additionally liked in the article when they were talking about how certain products "die" and a product takes its place or get updated over time, etc. This instantly made me think of MySpace. When I was in middle school MySpace was the thing to be on, and then once I got to high school facebook took over. It's interesting because they are basically they same thing: social networking where you can connect with friends, share photos, etc. For whatever reason, consumers were more attracted to facebook and MySpace never gained the updates that would keep their current consumers.
