Reading Response 2 - Dillon Marlatt


This reading assignment touched on a tremendous amount of topics so the one in which I will be touching on is the how new technology is changing how we consume technology new and old. The internet started to take away viewers of television, offering exactly what the viewer wants without the wait or ads. This new technology changed the consumer into thinking they have the right to view things without having to wait for it to come up at a programmed time or waiting for ads. Though internet sites, such as Youtube, started to monetize their videos by having ads play before the video buffers, there are still ways around this that weren't possible back in exclusively-televised days. It is these ads, that have transversed technological medium from the television screen to your monitor screen, that symbolize the acceptance and embrace of new media buses.


As explained in the reading assignment, many Media Producers are trying to hold onto their "empire" while either standing still on their technological podium of old or tiptoeing into the light of new technological change. A prime example is how the Super Bowl is broadcast. Just last year was the first time the Super Bowl was legally streamed on the internet (for a fee of course).  There has been numerous lawsuits and pronouncement of removals from the internet from sites who were streaming the Super Bowl in years past, so in response, the Super Bowl had to begin streaming the game, because the new technological way of life people held demanded it.

Below is a link to an article/video that I found very interesting, who comment on if TV will embrace the internet, and how they use the internet (specifically twitter) to gauge how their show, their writings are handling with their viewers. A literal real-time customer review.

They did detail, however, that as of right now (or at least in 2010), the internet and television needed to work together, like how their writers use twitter. When asked about Hulu and other similar websites, they say how great it is for exposure, but question whether the benefits go beyond that, mainly due to the isolation of their Hulu fans not being included with other fans in terms of "top shows".
