GIF's are not normally seen as a form of art just because they are easy to make and usually have a simple concept or idea behind them. What people fail to take into account is the personal connection that people can feel when they see a GIF. That's why Sally McKay talks about the gallery being the internet. Because the internet is such a widespread place, it is the perfect gallery. But since it is in the confines of someone's home, they have a greater ability to connect with the GIF, especially when it's something they specifically enjoy such as a tv show, a certain image, or even a quote. For example, my sister and I were in the middle of watching a football game. A player fell out of bounds and knocked down a coach. He then proceeded to get up and knock down the coach again. It was very funny. My sister immediately predicted that it would be turned into a GIF soon. Without fail, this GIF showed up online the next day.
This just shows how easily a person can find a connection to a GIF. And because the entire internet is full of them, it is very easy to find one that is interesting to someone. While the GIF is neither photography or film, it has wedged itself nicely in between the two. GIF's are an art form that can be very addicting, because one can find themselves watching them for extended periods of time. In this sense, they are similar to short, fun video games such as angry birds or peggle. While neither have amazing graphics or are recognized for their artistic merit, they still have a place in art for their interesting methods and addicting nature.
